Among all the major components of the eye, the most valuable and important structure is a retina and a visual nerve. Because of the complexity of its structure, the eyes need a special care.

Ukrainian scientists have made a breakthrough in this area. They managed to create a unique device by which a person may itself review its retina and eye microvessels unaided.

Fundus translated from Latin means “bottom”. Thus, it is a device that allows you to look at the bottom of the eye that is the place where the retina is itself situated.

The development is based on the knowledge of different sciences. The work was done in a close association of doctors, physicians, engineers, and IT-specialists. The technical part of development is optics, video camera, software for image processing, and, of course, a medical procedure.

The Fundus system works on the principle Transscleral translucence. The sclera is an opaque white connective plate that forms the eye. It performs protective and supporting functions.

The method of Transscleral is a way to identify and detect certain defects in the sclera area, choroid. This method can be performed using LED light sources. Our method of Transscleral in the infrared radiation allows you to diagnose in the infrared range of wavelength.

The special light sources called LEDs are used. LED is the most adaptive device because it is lightweight, easy to use, small, and relatively cheap, which is also important. This light source is very similar to a laser, but the laser is too expensive and not very convenient device, and it’s still a cumbersome system.

The use of lasers in Ophthalmoscopy, and in this method, is certainly not necessary and indispensable. It is much better to use small, portable, convenient devices, aluminum diodes such as LED. The device is mainly used with red and infrared LEDs. The quality of ray fundus depends on their spectrum.

Spectral characteristics of fabrics appear differently in the red and infrared wavelengths, so the picture differs a little. It allows diagnosing deeper layers in infrared light, which are located behind the retina. The principle of the eye work can be compared to the principle of the video camera work. This is, in fact, what receives light. If we compare the eye with modern imaging systems, the retina will be similar to the CCD, so the retina receives light as the information, translates in the visual analyzer and, delivers information along the optic nerve to the brain in the higher centers of visual information processing. Thus, we get that vision of which we used to dream count on. That is why doctors try to preserve the retina from damage during any intervention in the eye.

As retina is a large number of nerve cells in terms of anatomy, and as we know well that if any problems occur at the level of nerve cells, the regenerative abilities of the organism are limited. Therefore, the entire structure of modern disability vision and low vision, problems on the part of the retina bodies as the main part of the vision are most important. Today scientists have developed two versions of the fundus.

  1. Stationary – for professional ophthalmologists
  2. Portable – for self-control by the patient

That is the devices that can be conditionally divided into the stationary used device. The device that is best suited for use by ophthalmologists, medicals, and tools that apply to home used devices. The main difference between stationary devices is the availability of highly sensitive video camera. This is a special video camera that contains adjustment of the brightness, contrast, and an optical system. This is a highly sensitive matrix, which is sensitive to both visible light and near-infrared area, is an area that is not already focused on the eye. In fact, this is the source of radiation. The camera is synchronized with your computer using special software.

The portable version of the fundus system looks like an ordinary flashlight. This is a power supply that is connected to the LED. This LED is specifically chosen to view eyes layers that are necessary for the patient that is precisely that shells you need. Even the simplest variant of the invention, it is completely portable, easy to use, small, and light. You can always take it with you. So it is just the way it works.
